The Greek island of Santorini was hit on Thursday in the morning by other earthquakes. Extensive seismic activity in recent days has driven thousands of residents from homeswrites TASR, according to the AFP report. The Athens Geodynamic Institute recorded seven consecutive shocks on Thursday morning with a magnitude exceeding 4.0. On Wednesday evening, the shocks of the magnitude reached 5.2, which has been the highest since the weekend.

Experts are not yet able to accurately estimate when seismic activity will end. “The intensity is decreasing, but it has not yet been stubbilled,” said Athanassos Ganas, head of the research of the Geodynamic Institute for State ERT television. “We are halfway,” added Deputy Director of the Institute Vassilis Karastathis.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said on Thursday that more than 6,000 shocks were near the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi and iOS from 26 January. Santorini has left more than 11,000 inhabitants and seasonal workers since the weekend.

No injuries or damage has been reported so far. However, the authorities have preventively deployed rescue teams and deployed other seismological sensors. At the same time, people recommended that they do not stay in coastal areas due to the risk of landslides and avoid gatherings in enclosed spaces.

Experts say that the region has not experienced a seismic activity of such a scope since the beginning of data recording in 1964. Santorini lies on top of the volcano, which last exploded in 1950. However, according to the Committee of Experts, the current shocks “are not related to volcanic activity”.

Greece’s territory is located on several tectonic breaks and earthquakes are quite common here. The island of Santorini is one of the most popular Greek tourist destinations. It has only 15,500 permanent residents, but in 2023 it was visited by 3.4 million tourists.
