US Post Office annul decision to prohibit orders from China

USPS will work with customs and border protection to implement a collection process for new rates imposed on Chinese goods in order to avoid interruptions in delivery

The US Postal Service (USPS) chose on Wednesday to revoke the decision to temporarily stop accepting orders from China, at a time when the trade war between Washington and Beijing intensifies.

The Post Office announced on Tuesday that they would no longer accept orders from China and Hong Kong, after the United States imposed an additional 10% rate on Chinese products and put a term to an customs exception that allowed entry, exempt of rates, of small amounts in the United States.

The postcard service reversed the position on Wednesday, but did not give any justification, just stating that it was going to work with customs and the protection of borders to implement a collection process for the new imposed fees on Chinese goods, in order to avoid interruptions in delivery.

The ban could create huge disturbances for e -commerce platforms such as Shein and Temu, popular among younger consumers in the United States for cheap clothing and other products, normally sent directly from China.

The direct and cheap postal service helps these companies maintain low costs, such as the exemption that previously allowed shipments to be tax -free if the value was less than $ 800 (770 euros).

USPS suspension would likely have probably triggered delays in shipping and prices potentially higher for companies that depend on very low prices to make sales.

One day after the US postal service announced that it would stop accepting orders from China and Hong Kong until new order, he said on Wednesday that “he would continue to accept all the mail and international orders from China and Hong Kong”.

The letters and packages – mail that measures up to 38 centimeters long or 1.9 centimeters thick – were not included in the brief ban.

USPS did not give a reason for the ban on Tuesday, but the suspension came after US President Donald Trump, abolishing customs exemption for low value products this week.

Exemption has been removed as part of an executive order to charge a 10% fee on all products from China.

US border customs and protection prior that it processes an average of more than four million orders from China a week.

According to the new rates imposed by Trump, analysts say consumers probably will see price increases and possible delays in sending companies such as Shein and Temu.

AliExpress, from the Alibaba Group, has also usually used commercial gap. Neil Saunders, director-general of the GlobalData investigation company, said that some companies that sell through Shopify and other e-commerce platforms, such as ETSY, also send orders to consumers directly from China. Amazon does the same for a subset of products sold through Amazon Haul, a low -cost ‘online’ showcase that launched last year to compete with Shein and Temu.

The US imported about 427 billion (410 billion euros) in China commodities in 2023, the latest year with complete data, according to official data.
