Who was going to imagine that with the PP in the government of the municipality of affection (A Coruña) would succeed a motion to attach the founder of the street party without the opposition of his councilors. The municipal plenary approved this Thursday. The proposal to strip of this distinction to whom he was president of the Xunta for 16 years was presented by the BNG to fail his active role in the Franco dictatorship. He went ahead without votes against, not even those of the four popular councilors present (his fifth mayor did not go to the session), who opted for abstention. The support of the three nationalist representatives and the other three of the PSDEG-PSOE led to its approval because the PP is in the minority.
“As a server of Franco and minister of a criminal dictatorship, Manuel Fraga does not deserve social recognition,” says the motion to which the PP of affection has refrained. The agreement, which, also urges the mayor of the PP Ana María López, to communicate to the educational community of the College of Children and Primary that bears the name of Fraga “The favorable opinion of the Plenary of the Corporation of affection for the change name “of the center, so that” be studied by the School Council. ” In the event that this measure is accepted by the school, the corporation exposes, it could be approved by the Plenary and the agreement would be sent to the Department of Education of the Xunta. Both the street and the school were called the former tourism minister of Francisco Franco in the early 1970s, that is, during the dictatorship.
The mayor of affection has avoided attending to this newspaper to expose the reasons why the PP does not oppose the name of the current avenue of Manuel Fraga and the school that honors the founder of his party. The Provincial Directorate of the Popular has also declined to give an explanation. Even the BNG spokesman of affection, Carlos Castro, confesses not to understand the sense of the vote of the governor and her mayor, especially because only a few months ago they opposed this same measure. On that occasion, despite the fact that the PP is in a minority in the plenary, its vote against it blocked the withdrawal of the name of Fraga because the left lacked majority due to the absence of a socialist councilor.
Castro explains that the idea is now “to agree on the new name” of the avenue “between the three forces”, in reference to PP, PSOE and BNG, to avoid “controversies.” The nationalist councilor ensures that the popular do not refuse to participate in that negotiation. The motion to withdraw Honores to Fraga in the Galician municipalities for his participation in Franco’s dictatorship has been touring the plenary halls of the community since 2018, with the vote against the PP councilors. It was promoted by the group of dams and political prisoners and policies of Galiza, an organization composed of 44 reprisals by the dictatorship and whose initiative received the support of 63 historians and 56 entities. Since then they have managed to strip the former president of the Xunta of the distinctions granted by the municipalities of Ferrol and Cedeira.
The motion approved in love criticizes the “sympathy and admiration” of Fraga and the denial of the Jewish holocaust and attributes “lack of humanity”, in addition to highlighting that the founder of the PP “actively participated in the policy of repression against the Galician language and the media ”. The Plenary also approved the street dedicated to Prudencio Landín Carrasco, who was a civil governor of A Coruña between 1968 and 1972, in addition to mayor of Pontevedra and president of the Diputación of this province during the dictatorship.
