Is it even possible to know whether lemons have been chemically treated? Can the fruits of pesticides be rid of and why does dTest magazine recommend a candied lemon zest?

Is it possible to wash off pesticides from citrus?

Why is it important to know whether citrus are treated with chemical sprays or pesticides or, on the contrary, meet the conditions of products in organic quality?

The problem of citrus is the porosity of their peel. While pesticides remain on almost all fruits to a greater or lesser extent, they can often be relieved quite well by washing. However, do not imagine that fruits or vegetables are full of chemistry on the surface. Possible remains of spraying on the fruits must meet specific safe limits, otherwise they could not be sold. Even these residues can then be rid of the fetus, but it can never be 100 %. In citrus, the problem is all the greater because they have a strong porous bark, and therefore the washing of such a residue is essentially impossible, as the skin is saturated in depth.

If you have chemically untreated citrus at home, do not hesitate to dry or freeze their bark so you can use it for baking and cooking later. How to do it? You will see this in this post from the YouTube channel Toprecepty. But before you do it, read the article to the end, maybe you prefer to make a bark candied.

Does it make sense to scrub or soak lemons?

If you are looking for a simple trick to get rid of pesticides 100 %, then we will have to disappoint you. Recommendations about soaking in soda or vinegar are, if not false, very misleading. It was even scientifically confirmed that soaking in water with vinegar or soda had smaller cleaning effects than ordinary washing under running water.

In fruits like citrus, however, it is complete nonsense, as pesticides penetrate the depth of the fetal peel. When attempting to soak in acetic water and subsequent washing with water, the minimization of residues was achieved by about half. Certainly, these substances cannot be rid of these substances by cleaning.

How to get to know chemically untreated lemons?

The only way to make sure the quality of citrus is during their purchase. All organic foods from the EU must be marked with a logo for European organic food or a so -called biolius.

Food in organic quality grown in our country must have both the European biolištek and our national logo for these foods. Food is marked with “organic” and the inscription “Ecological Agriculture”. The designation is mandatory for all certified organic products in the Czech Republic. In addition, there is also a numeric code of the organization that issued this certificate on the packaging. The code has a “CZ-BIO-XXX” shape.

Unfortunately, the magazine dTest has also spent in the past about the quality of fresh lemons, both bio and chemically treated. Although all the substances found on the lemon cortex were underclimed, pesticides were also found on organic production fruits. DTEST magazine therefore encourages the use of candied bark, which is not fresh, but that is its advantage. The processing has further minimized residual chemicals, so the tested fresh, dried and candied bark is the last mentioned option.
