PSB national president Carlos Siqueira announced on Thursday (6) the candidacy of the mayor of Recife (PE), João Camposto succeed him in the leadership of the party. The decision was communicated during a meeting of the National Directory, which occurred in person and virtual.
João Campos, who is 31, must have his name presented at the 16th National Congress of the PSB, scheduled for May 30 and 31 and June 1, in Brasilia. Siqueira defended the choice as part of an internal renewal.
“A very promising young man, who has an extraordinary maturity in his youth, this is a necessary generational change and points to a very positive perspective for the PSB,” he said.
The meeting was attended by the Vice-President and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, the Minister of Entrepreneurship, Márcio França, and the governors Renato Casagrande, from Espírito Santo, and João Azevêdo, from Paraíba.
Siqueira praised Campos for his political action and communication capacity in a polarization scenario. “With the youth that John represents and a modern program that we have been able to build in the PSB’s self -reform, I believe the party projects itself hard for future disputes,” he said.
The president of the PSB also pointed out that João Campos adapts well to the digital environment and has mastery over new forms of communication. “I believe that at the head of the party, with the support of all companions, as happened to me, John will play an important role in favor of party growth.”

Siqueira took the opportunity to say goodbye to the position. He has been in charge of the acronym since 2014, when he took over after the death of former governor Eduardo Campos. “The thanks I make today is moved. I’m happy, I know I made mistakes, I apologize for them because we are human and, of course, no one is perfect, much less me, ”he said.
The leader stressed that, despite the leadership changes, the party remains strengthened. “It is the people who do the institution, but the institution will subsist and continue its history, notwithstanding to people who are important, but who leave or leave their functions, as is my case next May,” he said.
During the meeting, the dates of the municipal, state and national congresses of the party were approved in 2025. The zonal, municipal and district meetings will take place between 1st and 31 March, and the state between 1 and 30 April.

The central theme of the 16th National Congress will be “Brazil – Creative and Sustainable Power”, with debates on political conjuncture, party strengthening for the 2026 elections, green economy and multilateralism.
The event will also feature a tribute to pianist Arthur Moreira Lima, affiliated with the PSB, who died in October 2024, and former South Africa President Nelson Mandela.
