Giulia Righetto, 26, died after being hit by the ceiling of the São Francisco de Assis Church, in the Historic Center of Salvador

The Minister of Culture, Margareth Menezes, expressed her condolences to the family of Giulia Righetto, 26, this Thursday (6.FEV.2025). The young woman died after being hit by the partial collapse of the ceiling of the São Francisco de Assis Church, known as the “Golden Church”, in the Historic Center of Salvador, on the afternoon of Wednesday (5.FEV).

According to the newspaper Folha de S. PauloMargareth Menezes contacted Gilmar, Giulia’s father, to provide support.

The collapse took place at the time a group of tourists visited the place. There was no religious celebration at the moment. In addition to Giulia, 5 other people were injured.

VICTIM

Paulista Giulia Righetto, 26, was in the city Turismo. Advertising, she worked as a marketing analyst at Mondelez.

According to the Bahia Fire Department, 30 military personnel were displaced until the occurrence. The DPT (Department of Technical Police) was called to identify the victims and take legal proceedings. The Civil and Military Police, the Codesal (Mobile Emergency Care Service and the Salvador Civil Defense) also supported, as well as other state and federal agencies. “Thirty military firefighters from various operating units, as well as two ambulances from the 12th BBM/Save and one Auto Pump Tank Savior (ABTS) vehicle acted in the collapse of the ceiling of the São Francisco de Assis Church in Pelourinho, in Salvador, on Wednesday afternoon -Lindo (5). Five people were injured and one died in the collapse, teams from the Technical Police Department (DPT) was triggered were called for identification and other legal procedures. The Civil and Military Police, the Mobile Emergency Care Service and the Salvador Civil Defense (Codesal) also supported the occurrence, as well as other state and federal agencies. ”

Golden Church

The Church of St. Francis of Assisi was founded in the early 18th century, is listed as material heritage of Brazil and considered one of the seven wonders of Portuguese origin in the world. However, it already had signs of degradation, such as paintings and worn ceiling, pilasters without plaster and uneven floor, according to the G1 report.

The complete restoration of the temple depended on the evaluation and approval of a work project by the IPHAN Technical Commission (Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage).
