According to US experts, the site would have spaces to house reinforced bunkers for a possible nuclear conflict
US government intelligence accuses China of building a military complex 10 times larger than the west of Beijing. The site would serve as the command center of the Chinese government in times of war.
According to information from the newspaper Financial Times, US officials would be following the site closely since the start of construction in mid-2024. Intelligence analysts investigating the case dubbed the project of “Beijing Military City”.
Satellite images obtained by the report, which are currently being examined by the US government, show a place of construction of about 1,500 acres, just over 6,000 square kilometers, 30 km southwest of Beijing.
The images reveal that the area has deep holes that, according to military experts, will house great bunkers reinforced to protect Chinese military leaders during any conflict, including potentially nuclear war.
“If confirmed, this new advanced underground bunker for military leadership, including President XI as President of the Central Military Committee, signals Beijing’s intention to build not only a conventional world -class force, but also an advanced combat capacity nuclear”said Dennis Wilder, former China’s chief chief for the CIA.
The construction is at a time when the ELP (Popular Liberation Army) of China is developing new weapons and projects in preparation for the centenary of Force in 2027. According to the United States Intelligence Service, Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered that The ELP also develop the ability to attack Taiwan.
The newspaper reported that although there was no military presence at the scene, signs warning against the capture of photographs or the use of drones could be seen in the area. One of the guards of a gate stated that entry into construction was prohibited.
An old high US secret service official said that although the current headquarters of the popular liberation army in the center of Beijing was relatively new, it was not designed to be a safe command center.
“China’s main safe command center is in Western Hills, northeast of the new facilities, and was built for decades at the height of the Cold War”said the former officer. “The size, scale, and partially buried features of the new installation suggest that it will replace the Western Hills complex as the main command time installation.”.
