As a result of his conviction of abusive exertion of influence and corruption on December 18, 2024, the former president of France is obliged today – and for a year – to wear an electronic bracelet on a permanent basis that will certify that he is serving the penalty of banning exit from his residence from 10 in the evening to 8am.
It is the first time that a former president of the French Republic has been condemned – essentially – to imprisonment, which in the case of Nicolas Sarkozy has, following a court ruling, in the form of home restraint.
French media reports that Nicolas Sarkozy has canceled all his international obligations for the coming months, but noting that he would apply for exemption from the electronic bracelet, citing the fact that he is over 70 years old.
Meanwhile, Nicolas Sarkozy’s trial continues on charges of illegal funding his election campaign in 2007 by the Gaddafi regime in Libya.
