The supreme leader of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, met this Saturday (8) with the main leaders of the In Tehran, the state news agency Irna said. The meeting was with Khalil Al-Hayya, deputy chief of the Hamas Political Summit, and Muhammad Ismail Darwish, Chairman of the Hamas Shura Council.

Khamenei stated that the people of Gaza defeated “the Zionist regime, and America, and did not allow them to achieve any of their goals.” He also thanked Hamas officers who negotiated the ceasefire agreement with Israel, second Irna. Hamas is one of the main allies in the region and is part of what Iran calls the “axis of resistance”, a group of countries and organizations in their sphere of influence that oppose Israel. Also part of the “axis” are the Hezbollah, from Lebanon and the rebels Houthis, from Yemen.

The year 2024 was bad for this Iranian sphere of influence. The Bashar Al-Assad government in Syria, one of the closest allies, was overthrown by rebels, while Hezbollah and Hamas suffered serious losses. Israel managed to kill Hamas military leader Yahya Sinwar, in the Gaza Strip, and murdered with drones the group’s political arm leader, Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, in what was seen as a humiliation for the Iranian regime.
