The president of, (-PB), said on Friday (7) that he will seek an agreement with the Senate and the (Supreme Court) about the redistribution of the seats in the house to reflect the population changes of the 2022 Census.
The idea of the mayor, he said in an interview, is to increase the total number of chairs in the House, to prevent states from losing “political representativeness”, from 513 to 527 deputies.
“I think perhaps the solution was a great deal, a conversation with the Senate, combined with the Supreme, so that we will increase the vacancies of deputies. It would be 14 more vacancies, to compensate the states they would lose,” he said.
Today, a bill is being processed in the House that redistributes these seats. The text, however, will see the number of deputies decrease, such as Paraíba, Motta State.
The project seeks to meet a Supreme Determination for Congress to make the adjustments. If this does not occur until June 30, 2025, the distribution would be made by the (Superior Electoral Court).
According to Motta, there are other projects that deal with this issue suggesting the total increase of chairs in the House. He stated that everything will be done with consent and dialogue with the president of the Senate, (União Brasil-AP), as he will need the guarantee that a project that deals with this theme is approved in the house.
At another point, he gave the Supreme Court a message by saying that the Court established a deadline for this theme to be dealt with by Congress. “There is the STF today saying that Congress, which is sovereign to decide on it, has until June to decide, otherwise the TSE, based on the 2022 census, can do this redistribution.”
He stated that this is a theme that will be treated with maturity and frankness, listening to the leaders in the House. Motta also stressed that the increase in chairs in the house will not necessarily generate more expenses for the House.
According to him, it is possible to think of an alternative that does not increase the budget of the house. “So that we can balance and cut something so that these vacancies will not increase the cost of the house. I think you can do it if you have a good will,” he said.
