The head of the organization will talk to the temporary Syrian president not only about the ban on chemical weapons.

Fernanado Arias, head of the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), will meet with temporary Syrian President Ahmad Šar on Saturday. It is his first visit to the country from the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad, who was repeatedly accused of using banned chemical weapons during the 13-year Civil War. TASR writes according to AFP.

“We will broadcast how President of the Syrian Arab Republic Ahmad al-Shara and the Minister of Foreign Assad of the Assad will receive a delegation of the Organization for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW),” the official Syrian channel on the social network Telegram said. OPCW chief Fernanado Arias.

In 2013, Syria agreed to enter OPCW shortly after the attack probably killed more than 1,000 people in Damascus. The then government handed over its declared stock to destruction, but OPCW was not convinced that the Declaration of Damascus about the number of such weapons was complete. However, Assad’s government denied the use of chemical weapons.

In 2014, the OPCW created a “facts detecting mission” to investigate the use of chemical weapons in Syria and subsequently published 21 reports covering 74 cases of their alleged use. According to investigators, chemical weapons were or probably used in 20 cases.
