Current champion Bayer Leverkusen drew goalless with Wolfsburg on Saturday, being eight points behind Bundesliga leader, Bayern Munich, while coach Xabi Alonso equalized the most unbeaten record in games away from home.
Alonso, whose team needed extension on Wednesday to beat the second division’s colony and reach the German Cup semifinals, made an intense rotation, leaving midfielder Florian Wirtz in the bank initially.
They clearly missed their offensive shine, as Wolfsburg had more goal kicks. The hosts hit the post in a strong kilian fischer kick after 74 minutes.
Despite some pressure at the end and a golden chance in addition to substitute Wirtz, Leverkusen could not win.
With the draw, Alonso equaled coach Udo Lattek’s historic record of 27 consecutive games away from home without defeat.
Leverkusen is in second place with 46 points. Bayern is 54, after a 3-0 win over Werder Bremen on Friday.
