Quarteira students create tile panels to celebrate inclusion and multiculturality

Students from two groups from Quarteira schools in the Algarve will create 12 tile panels under an artistic project to celebrate the inclusion and multiculturality of this city, the Parish Council announced.

The project “intends to integrate migrant children, representing more than 40% of students enrolled in the previous school year in Quarteira, promoting interculturality, appreciation of public space and non-discrimination in the school context, through art”, explains the Together in a statement.

The Artistic Base of “Quart Tiles” – Quarteira Project with Art, Transformation, Local, School and Social Interculturality – is based on the creation of 12 tile panels, produced by students from 6th to 10th grade, together with the school community and place, under the accompaniment and supervision of artist Miguel Cheta and the help of Mariana Dias Coutinho.

The name of the project associates the words, some of them in the English language, quarter, art (art) and tile panels (Tiles).

“The ‘Quart Tiles’ project celebrates the inclusion and multiculturality of Quarteira, involving the city’s community, in the creation of a public art object in tiles,” said Miguel Cheta, responsible for the project, quoted in the statement.

The artist added that he will portray “the current quarter, promoting dialogue, union and feeling of belonging” and that “participatory art values ​​identities and reinforces community ties.”

The work, which is already under development, will be installed along Avenida Carlos Mota Pinto, in Quarteira, in the municipality of Loulé, and its inauguration is scheduled for May 13, 2025.

“This project is much more than an artistic initiative. It is a celebration of diversity and an incentive to the valorization of respect and coexistence between cultures, ”said the president of the Quarteira Parish Council, also cited in the statement.

For Telmo Pinto, with the tiled panels created by the students of the two school groups of the Algarve Parish, “the history, traditions and identities of those who live here and study are mirrored along one of the city’s main entrances.”

The “Quart Tiles”, held by in partnership with the António Aleixo Foundation and the D. Dinis and Drª School Groups. Laura Ayres results from the candidacy inclusion for culture, funded by the Algarve 2030 regional program through the European Social Fund (FSE+).
