Like what happened last year, the south winds that push north a specific smell from Alentejo may be north.
This Monday is a bad smell in Lisbon, characterized as a strong odor to olive. So far, and according to the there is no reason for concern.
Lisbon dawned with a different smell in the air, which can be felt from Seixal to Torres Vedras.
“This dawn occurred, a situation of low thermal inversion. There is a kind of helmet effect where these odors are imprisoned in the lower layers of the atmosphere and we can notice that there is this odor to olives in the air,” he explains to Sic Sofia Teixeira, researcher of

It is a very characteristic odor and may be from olive bagasse processing factories.
“This is the result of all submatery that was not used in the production of olive oil itself and is subtracted through its processing in this type of industries,” says the researcher.
But, according to the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), there is no reason for concern.
To SIC, the APA says it is continuously monitoring and, in real time, the air quality in the network stations.
It also reveals that there is no problem in the level of pollutants measured with health effects.
The winds should continue to blow southeast, at least during the next two days. In the meantime it may continue to feel an olive odor in the air.
