The television debate between the German office Olaf Scholz and his conservative counter -candidate Friedrich Merz watched more than 12 million viewers on Sunday evening. According to DPA, this results from the first data analysis, writes TASR.

The balance sheet is not included in viewers who have watched the debate broadcasted by public television ARD and ZDF online on social networks.

The discussion of Scholz with Merz as the two strongest candidates for the post of federal office concerned many topics, including cooperation with the extreme right -wing alternative to Germany (AfD), migration policy and war in Ukraine.

Official data says the debate was watched by 12.26 million people

Their pre -election duel was broadcast two weeks before the elections to the German Federal Parliament. According to official data, 12.26 million people watched it on television. For comparison, the DPA added that the three -sided discussion among the top candidates of the elections in 2021 attracted 10.87 million viewers to TV screens.

Scholz and Merz will meet again on the television studio this Sunday and will discuss in a wider line -up with the leader of AfD Alica Weidel and vice -chainlator Robert Habeck by the Greens.

Merz is the leader of the Conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which with the support of 29-34 percent leads default surveys. Second place ranks with about 21 percent, Scholza’s Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) is up to the third with a support of 15-18 percent.
