Party in power in Kosovo wins the elections without majority

The party in Power in Kosovo, led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, won Sunday’s elections, but without the absolute majority, opening the possibility that opposition reaches power.

The leftist party, self -determination (or vetevendosje), obtained 41.99% of the votes, winning the elections in Kosovo. Despite the victory, Albin Kurti’s party has no majority in Parliament.

With 88% of the votes counted, the second most voted party is the Kosovo Democratic Party (PDK)which emerged from the Kosovo Liberation Army Guerrilla (Uçk), with 21.83% of the votes, followed by the Kosovo Democratic League (LDK), which obtained 17.75%.

The Aak-Sum, another party with roots in Uçk, obtained 7.68%, while political formation served, representing the Serbian community of Kosovo, obtained 3.96%.

Thus, the government formation of the winning party loses nine points compared to 2021, when the leftist nationalist party got 50.3 % of the votes, and won 58 of the 120 seats in Parliament (twenty places are reserved for the ethnic minorities of the former province Serbia, who proclaimed independence in 2008).

The votes of the diaspora have not yet been cleared, but if these results are confirmed, the PDK, the LDK and the Aak-Sum, with the support of the minority vote, may be an alternative to the Prime Minister’s party. Before the political party self -determination has reached power, these three parties shared the various government coalitions.

“The elections were free, democratic and fair,” said the self -determination leader at a press conference in Pristina on Sunday night.

These elections can also influence Kosovo’s relationship with the European Union and one Any opposition coalition may alter the country’s relations with Serbia.

O presented in 2022, remains blocked Due to the lack of consensus among the 27 members, namely about the refusal of five countries – Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain – to recognize Kosovo’s independence.
