SAO PAULO, SP (Folhapress)-A bus accident killed at least 51 people, and several were injured, many of them arrested on the hardware, on the morning of Monday (10) in the city of Guatemala, capital of the country. The vehicle lost control on a bridge and crashed into a bluff.
The crowded collective, with more than 70 passengers, came from the city of San Agustin Mating, about 90 km from the city of Guatemala, and fell approximately 20 meters from a bridge on a stream that passes over a stream. Images shared by the Fire Department on social networks showed the partially submerged bus.
Firefighters spokesman Carlos Hernández said the bodies of 36 men and 15 women were sent to a morgue prepared to receive the victims.
The rescuers rescued at least ten people injured. Most were taken to a nearby public hospital.
President Guatemalateco, Bernardo Arévalo, declared three days of national mourning and mobilized the country’s army and the disaster agency to help. “I am in solidarity with the families of the victims who today woke up with devastating news. Your pain is my pain, ”he said on social networks.
The mayor of the city of Guatemala, Ricardo Quiñonez, stated that emergency services were called while the traffic police worked to establish alternative routes in the affected area. Authorities investigate the causes of the accident.
Guatemala has recorded several bus accidents over the years, many of which have resulted in dozens of deaths, mainly due to poor transport conditions, insecure roads and overcrowding of vehicles.
