Did you feel the earth tremble? It was not your impression: earthquake of magnitude 4.9 felt throughout the Algarve

On the night of Monday, an earthquake of magnitude 4.9 was recorded in northern Morocco and also impacted in Portuguese territory, being felt in various locations of the Algarve. The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) confirmed that the shaking was noted in the municipalities of Albufeira, Faro, Loulé, Olhão and Silves, although there is no record of damage or injured.

According to the United States Geological Service (United States Geological Survey -USGS), the earthquake occurred at 10:48 pm, about 26 kilometers to Les-Northeast of Alcácer Quibir, in Morocco, with a depth of 10 kilometers. The epicenter has been located in a region where seismic activity is relatively frequent due to the proximity of the junction between African and eurasian tectonic plates.

On social networks, especially on Facebook, several users of the Algarve region reported having felt the earthquake. Among the localities mentioned stand out Quarteira, Olhão and Faro, where some people claimed to have noticed vibrations in their dwellings, although short duration. The reports indicate that the earthquake was moderately felt, without causing large alarms.

According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), he confirmed, through the social network X, that the shake was felt in Portuguese territory. This information was shared by several users who described the sensation of the tremor and the surprise for feeling a Moroccan earthquake in Portugal.

Despite its magnitude, an earthquake of this intensity rarely causes significant damage, especially when it occurs at a depth of 10 kilometers. However, seismic shaking in the region are monitored carefully by the authorities, as tectonic activity in the area may, in some cases, generate stronger tremors.

The IPMA continues to follow the situation and recalls that Portugal is located in an area with some seismic activity, and it is always recommended to be aware of safety indications. In the event of a stronger earthquake, it is essential to know how to react, protecting itself from falls of objects and looking for shelter in safe places.

What to do in the case of earthquake?

In case of earthquake, it is essential to keep calm and act quickly to ensure your own safety and those around. If you are inside a building, you should look for shelter immediately. The main recommendation is to squat, protect the head and neck with the arms and, if possible, place yourself under a sturdy table or by an inner wall. Avoid being close to windows, mirrors or furniture that may fall and cause injuries.

If you are abroad, get away from buildings, electricity poles and trees as they can collapse with the force of tremor. Look for an open and safe place, keeping a look at possible collapse. If you are driving, reduce speed and park in a safe place, far from bridges, tunnels or structures that may fall apart. Stay inside the vehicle until the shake is over.

After the earthquake, it is essential to evaluate the situation and act with precaution. Check for injuries around you and provide assistance if possible. In case of gas leakage, turn off the main valve and avoid lighting matches or lighters. If there is a risk of building the building, come out carefully and go to a safe place, avoiding damaged elevators and stairs.
