US President Donald Trump signed a regulation on Monday to introduce 25 % duties on the import of steel and aluminum to the United States without exceptions. He also indicated that he is also considering introducing duties on cars, medicines and microchips. TASR reports according to AFP.

“Today I simplify our duties on steel and aluminum. It’s 25 percent without exceptions and relief, ”Trump said. At the same time, however, he added that he is considering an exception from duties to steel for Australia, with which the US has a business surplus. Reflections were also confirmed by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who spoke to Trump. According to him, the exception would be in the interest of both countries.

During his first term of office, Trump introduced 25 percent duties per steel and ten percent to aluminum. Later, however, he granted relief to several business partners, including the European Union, Great Britain, Canada and Mexico.

The latest duties for steel and aluminum products are likely to be hit hard by Germany and other EU countries. According to US import statistics, Canada, Brazil and Mexico were the largest steel suppliers to the US in 2024.

From 1 February, Trump wanted to impose 25 % import duties on all goods from Canada and Mexico, but after negotiating with the leaders of these countries, he postponed them by at least 30 days. However, duties of 10 percent beyond the existing duties to import from China began to pay. Trump will negotiate with the Chinese leader Si Jin-Pching on Tuesday.
