The ocean stretch, previously known in the United States as Mexico Gulf, is now listed on Google Maps with two names, Mexico’s first gulf, followed by America’s gulf in parentheses.

For US users the map already had only the name of Gulf of America, following an executive order of the president, Donald Trump, renamed the area.

Google has previously stated that it has “a longtime practice to apply name changes when they are updated to official government sources.”

“People who use Maps in the US summer ‘Gulf of America’, and people in Mexico Summer ‘Gulf of Mexico’. Everyone will see both names, ”he said in a statement on Monday (10).

Google reported last month that also the highest peak in the country, in Denali following the order of Trump.

Former President Barack Obama renamed Alaska to Denali in 2015 as an nod to the region’s native population. But this change was not made on Google Maps until this Tuesday (11).

Trump’s executive actions

Both changes result from an executive action that the Republican signed shortly after taking office, saying that the changes “honor American greatness.”

The Order criticized Obama’s decision to rename McKinley as “an affront to the former president’s life, his achievements and his sacrifice.”

Drawing parallels with Trump, the order notes that McKinley “defended tariffs” and was murdered “in an attack on the values of our nation and our success.”

The US Federal Aviation Administration also issued a warning on Monday (10) about.

“Please be aware that FAA is in the process of updating our data and charts to show a change from Mexico’s Gulf’s name to the Gulf of America and a change from Denali to Monte McKinley,” the agency announced.

The US coastal guard, responsible for patrolling the country’s sea coastal waters, has also begun to incorporate the new change in the name of the Gulf of America into its public notices.
