Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, declared Tuesday that the president of the United States, Donald Trump, agreed to “consider” an exemption to Australia about 25 % tariffs on aluminum and steel imports after maintaining a telephone conversation. “I proposed an exception for Australia and we both agreed to say that the president of the United States agrees that an exemption is being considered in the interest of both countries,” said Albanese at a press conference. Both leaders talked on Tuesday, Monday night in the US, during a call in which they discussed several issues, including the imposition of tariff leaflets to steel and aluminum that enters the North American country. In 2024, Australia exported 223,000 tons of steel to the United States and 83,000 tons of aluminum, according to data from the Ministry of Commerce, which would correspond to 1 % and 2 %, respectively, of the total American imports.
