The ban does not affect the personal devices of state employees, said state cyber director Colin Ahern
New York State has banned the use of chatbot produced by Chinese startup Deepseek on government devices, citing concerns about data privacy and censorship in China’s popular artificial intelligence (AI) application.
Under the new rules, state employees will be prohibited from downloading the application on all devices and networks managed by the State Information Technology Services Office, which manages technology for executive branch agencies in New York.
The ban does not affect the personal devices of state employees, said state cyber director Colin Ahern.
He refused to comment on whether the state government was in direct communication with DeepSeek about the ban.
Deepseek, owned by the Chinese Hedge High-Flyer hedge, gained fame in January, with its low-cost AI models rivaling Americans using less advanced Nvidia chips. However, Chinese chatbots also caused significant safety concerns among Western governments.
Analysis of security experts consulted by Wall Street Journal suggest that it has a hidden code that may allow information to be sent to companies sanctioned in China.
