The United Nations (UN) has decided to suspend its humanitarian operations in the bastion of Yemen’s Hurfish insurgents in the north of the country. The UN confirmed this on Monday after the detention of several employees, TASR reports according to AP.

The extraordinary decision to suspend all operations and programs in the northern province of Saada was due to the lack of “necessary security conditions and guarantees”, the UN writes in a statement.

According to the statement, the suspension of operations is to provide the Huses and the World Organization with time to ‘release arbitrarily detained UN staff and ensure the conditions needed to provide important humanitarian aid’ in areas controlled by insurgents.

The spokesman of Húsi did not immediately respond to the reports for comment. In recent months, the Huses have detained dozens of UN employees as well as other persons related to humanitarian organizations. At the end of January, the UN announced the suspension of all roads of its representatives to the areas controlled by Yemen’s insurgents.

The civil war in Yemen has been raging since 2014. The internationally recognized government is based in Aden port city on the southern coast.

The UN claims that the situation in Yemen is one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. It estimates that more than 18 million people need help there.
