Brazilian scientist wins ‘Nobel Environment’

Argentine ecologist Sandra Myrna Díaz and Brazilian anthropologist Eduardo Brondízio were recently harvested with the “Tyler Environmental Conquest Award 2025”, often referred to as the “Environment Nobel Prize”. The announcement was made by the Tyler Award Executive Committee on February 11, 2025. The two scientists will share a $ 250,000 prize. Sandra Díaz is a professor of ecology at the National University of Cordoba, Argentina, and a senior member of the country’s National Research Council (Conicet). It is recognized for its studies on the functional diversity of plants and how these characteristics influence ecosystems and environmental services essential to human life.

Eduardo Brondízio, professor at the Department of Anthropology, University of Indiana, United States, has dedicated almost four decades to research at. His studies highlight the vital role of local communities in environmental conservation, emphasizing the importance of traditional knowledge in the preservation of the forest. In a joint statement, the laureates stated: “The climate crisis, the biodiversity crisis, and the scandalous socioeconomic inequalities in the world are all connected, connected by the planet’s living fabric. They must be approached in an integrated manner, because one of these crises cannot be resolved without addressing the other two. ”

The Tyler Environmental Conquest Award recognizes individuals who contribute significantly to environmental science, environmental health and energy. The award of Diaz and Brondyza highlights the importance of integrated approaches that they consider both social dimensions in the search for sustainable solutions to global environmental challenges.
