The Chamber of Deputies of Argentina began, on Wednesday (12), the debate on a clean record law, which would prevent people convicted in the second instance from competing for public office in the country.
If approved, the project, presented by the government of Javier Milei, would prevent former President Cristina Kirchner from running for the presidency or new legislative positions.

For Kirchnerism, represented by the Parliamentary Block Union by the Fatherland, the law was elaborated “tailored” to prescribe the former president.
“This project has a name and surname, which is Cristina Kirchner, and paves the way for some judges to decide in electoral years who can be a candidate and who not,” said Deputy Leopoldo Moreau in the Chamber Constitution and Justice Commission.
Cristina Kirchner’s allies already accused them of trying to wage the debate.
The bill provides for the prohibition to apply for persons convicted of crimes such as diversion of funds, trafficking in influence, negotiations incompatible with the exercise of public functions, illicit enrichment of civil servants and crimes against public administration.
The impediment will only apply to condemnations in the second instance up to 180 days before the election in question. Otherwise, the prohibition will only apply to the next election.
If approved in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, the text will still need to go through the Senate, where the Milei government may have more difficulty approving.
“An expected and necessary debate began to prevent corrupt from coming to power. Deputies have a great opportunity to pass a must -have law for the Republic. The struggle of civil society (…) was key to reaching this day, ”said Argentine Defense Minister Luis Petri.
