Brussels (Reuters)-The European Commission will propose a new climate target in this quarter to reduce Europe’s emissions by 2040, the body said on Wednesday.
A committee’s work program, published on Wednesday, confirmed that the EU will change its climate law in this quarter – a long -planned measure that would define a goal for 2040 to keep countries on the right track for its goal of having zero net emissions Until 2050.
The commission said it intends to propose that EU countries jointly reduce their net emissions by 90% by 2040, compared to 1990 levels. The EU has pledged to reduce net emissions by 55% by 2030.
The climate target for 2040 will also be used to define a goal for 2035, which all countries should present to the UN this year, as a national contribution to the Paris Climate Agreement.
