The Tuscan region is its first area, which approved a specific law on the so -called “assisted”. The Tuscany Initiative is based on a verdict of the Italian Supreme Court and the widespread jurisdiction provided to the regions of the country, health and care.

From now on, in this region with the capital of Florence, a special committee of scientists will examine the patients’ demands for euthanasia, with a special “Bioethics Group” opinion. Subsequently, in the event of the approval of the Commission, the procedure should be completed within 54 days, finding the relevant drug and, possibly, the necessary technological equipment. Patients will be able to decide the process at any time.

In 2019, the Supreme Court of Appeal decriminalized, under certain conditions, the “assisted suicide”. The main conditions are that the patient must have the ability to make full awareness and clarity, suffer from “irreversible disease” with “unbearable pain” and depend on “continuous support, vital”. All of these conditions must be met at the same time.

The Supreme Court has asked Parliament to approve a law regulating – in total – this critical matter, but so far the House and the Senate of Rome have not responded to that appeal.
