The Austrian far right -wing free party of Austria (FPÖ) on Wednesday after the shipwreck of coalition talks with the Conservative Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) called for new elections. According to the DPA report, TASR reports this.

“The only honorary solution is now a quick layout of the new elections,” said FPÖ Secretary -General Christian Hafenecker.

Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen said in response that he is planning to explore other ways to create a government. For this reason, he wants to conduct interviews with representatives of individual parties in the coming days.

FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl received a mandate from the President to form a new government in January. On Wednesday, however, he informed the head of the state that he was giving up the mandate.

According to the AP in a letter addressed to the Austrian President Kickl of failure of the interviews, he accused the people and stated that the result was the inability of the parties to reach a mutual agreement. The free in many points retreated ÖVP, claims them 56-year-old leader, who was still full of optimism on the successful completion of the negotiations on Tuesday.

On the contrary, the people stated that the interviews “failed for the desire for power and the uncompromising attitude of Herbert Kickl”. In the event of the coalition negotiations, the leader of the far right side would be headed by the Austrian government for the first time since the Second World War.

Different opinions

In recent days, coalition negotiations between free and people have marked their different views, especially on foreign policy. The FPÖ demanded harder anti -immigration measures and has long been a great critic of the EU. It also condemned European sanctions imposed on Russia for its almost three -year invasion of Ukraine.

ÖVP claimed liabilities from Austria’s work in the EU, as well as to call Moscow a threat. Another disputed point was the occupation of specific ministries, especially the posts of finance and interior ministers.

At present, it is not clear what will happen further – whether Austria will organize new elections, whether other parties will try to create an alternative coalition or whether the President will declare a temporary government of experts.

Parliamentary elections were held in Austria on September 29, 2024, since it passed more than 130 days. The country has never previously happened that the winning parties were unable to form a new government for so long.

Van der Bellen entrusted Kickl by compiling the new coalition on January 6 after the negotiations between the ÖVP, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) and the Liberal Party of the Neos.

FPÖ won parliamentary elections with almost 29 percent of the votes, followed by ÖVP with more than 26 percent and SPÖ with more than 20 percent of the vote.
