After the incident, whose causes are not yet clarified, a large -scale operation was launched on site
Ricardo Della Coletta, Munich, Germany (Folhapress)-A car ran over a crowd in the city of Munich, on the morning of Thursday (13), and injured 28 people, according to local authorities from this southern city of Germany. According to police, two of the affected are in serious condition.
After the incident, whose causes are not yet clarified, a large -scale operation was launched at the site near the city’s central station. The driver, a 24 -year -old Afghan, police said, was arrested. “It was probably an attack,” Bavaria State Head of Government, Markus Soeder, told journalists, hours after the running over.
According to police, the Mini Cooper Branco approached vehicles during a demonstration called by the Verdi Server Union before accelerating, reaching several people. Munich mayor Dieter Reiter said there are children among the injured.
“I’m deeply shocked,” he said, according to Spiegel magazine. “My thoughts are wounded.”
German Prime Minister Olaf Scholz, in turn, said that a man the suspect cannot expect for indulgence. “He must be punished and should leave the country,” said the politician, according to Focus magazine. “If it was an attack, we should take consistent measures against possible perpetrators with all the means of justice.”
According to the German publication, the suspect was born in Cabul, the capital of Afghanistan in 2001, and went to Germany in 2016. Once in the country, he had the request for Asylum denied, but later his deportation was suspended.
“A person is lying on the street and a young man was taken by police. People are sitting on the floor, crying and tremendous, ”wrote a local reporter BR in an X post. The episode occurred at the confluence of Dachauer Strasse with Seidl Strasse, two important streets of the city.
The run over occurred about 1.3 km from the hotel that host the Munich Security Conference from Friday (14). United States Vice President JD Vance and Ukraine President Volodimir Zelenski are expected to arrive in the country on Thursday for the event.
The point where the incident occurred was isolated by the police, which allows the approach only of journalists to record images. Next to the Mini Cooper, which has shattered glass and headlights, there are belongings of people who were in the demonstration scattered around the street, such as signaling vests, umbrellas and a child cart.
The Munich Conference is one of the most important security and diplomacy events in the world, and the area in which it occurs was already strongly watched on Thursday morning before being run over.
Despite the proximity of the scene, the Bavarian interior minister said he did not suspect that the conference was the reason for the possible attack. Anyway, the alleged attack puts the country’s security again at the center of the debate less than two weeks of a federal election.
The episode adds to others of the same nature in Europe in recent years. In December last year, for example, a man broke into a Christmas market in Magdeburg, a city in Germany about 130 km from Berlin, killing at least five people and hurting tens.
Prior to that, in 2016, a man killed twelve people and injured 48 by invading a crowded market, also in the German capital, with a truck. The driver, the Tunisian Anis Amri, was killed four days later in Milan.
