The city of Tupã, located in the state of, recorded the first for, marking a critical moment in the fight against this viral disease. The victim, a 60 -year -old man who also suffered from diabetes, was hospitalized in the Holy House of Mercy. He began to show symptoms of the disease on January 3 and died on the 11th of the same month. The confirmation of the death was recently released, bringing out the severity of the situation in the region. To date, 631 cases of the disease have been confirmed in the municipality.
Faced with this alarming scenario, the Tupã City Hall intensified its actions to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the main transmitter of Chikungunya. The adopted measures include insecticide spraying, air and night nebulization, as well as increasing the number of field agents dedicated to the search and elimination of mosquito breeding sites. In addition, the city is cleaning and mowing land and public areas. With judicial authorization, authorities are also entering abandoned private properties to eliminate possible mosquito outbreaks.
The situation in Tupã reflects a larger problem faced by the state of Sao Paulo, which has already confirmed 1,186 cases of chikungunya and 3,773 probable cases. The Marilia region, where Tupã is located, counts 688 confirmed cases and 1,477 probable. At the national level, the Brazilian Ministry of Health recorded 13 deaths confirmed by Chikungunya, 14 under investigation and 2,762 probable cases. Chikungunya, like dengue, is transmitted by Aedes aegypti, a mosquito that proliferates in places with stopped water accumulation.
