Pico da Sé, on Flores Island, Azores
Maritime polar air mass will cause “a significant descent” of temperatures. “To occur, it will not be unheard of, but it is not so unusual.”
The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) revealed on Wednesday the possibility of falling neve at the highest points of the Azores.
The phenomenon-which although not unprecedented, is rare-due to a marine polar air mass which will cause “a significant descent” of temperatures.
According to the IPMA Azores Forecasting and Meteorological Surveillance Center, on Friday, “the circulation associated with a depression centered north of the archipelago will carry a maritime polar mass towards the Azores region”, which will cause “it a significant descent of air temperature on all islands. ”

This situation may lead to the occurrence of “showers, which may be hail and, above the quotas of 600, 800 and 1000 meters, may be snow” in the western groups (Flowers and crow), Central (Third, São Jorge, Pico, Graciosa and Faial) e Oriental (São Miguel and Santa Maria), the IPMA advances in a statement.
“To occur, it will not be unheard of, but it is not so unusual,” says meteorologist Márcio Santos.
Although snow is common on peak, it is much less frequent in other places, explains Luso Meteo, and snowfall is rare in the other Azorean mountains.
The phenomenon becomes a rarity with current average snow quota forecasts for the archipelago-between 500 and 600 meters in altitude.
