In detail | What included the original agreement between Israel and Hezbollah for Lebanon? And what modifications has suffered after almost three months?
On November 27, 2024, the Fuego Alto El Fuego agreement between Israel and the Milicia Chií Hezbollah, which ended a war that in just over a year killed more than 4,000 people and displaced more than one million . Since then, the parties involved have been repeatedly accused of violating the terms of high fire. These violations reached their highest moment on January 26, the date on which the stipulated deadline for Israel and Hezbollah was fulfilled to remove their troops from southern Lebanon. Israel refused to do so and killed 22 people trying to return to their homes.
But what does the agreement and what modifications have suffered so far?
After almost three months of its entry into force, the agreement has undergone these modifications:
– A first extension of the deadline to withdraw the troops of Israel and Hezbollah of the south of the country, until February 18.
– A second extension of that period, which the Israeli army has confirmed on Wednesday, until February 28.
The original terms of the agreement were these:
– The cessation of hostilities for 60 days and then turns it into a high permanent fire.
– In that period Israel would withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah would move its troops and weapons north of the Litani River, located 30 kilometers from the border between the two countries.
– The deployment of 10,000 soldiers of the Lebanese army as the only legitimate armed actor in southern Lebanon.
– The complete implementation of resolution 1701 of the United Nations, which ended the war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2006, but has not been implemented. The resolution prohibits the presence of any foreign force in Lebanon without the consent of the government; It demands the disarmament of all armed groups in Lebanon and the respect of the blue line – a kind of border between Israel and Lebanon created by the UN in 2006 where there can be no military presence Israeli or Hezbollah -, among other points.
– The absolute control of the Lebanese State in the processes of manufacturing and distribution of weapons.
– The creation of a group formed by the United States, France and the United Nations Interim Force for Lebanon (Unifil) to supervise the implementation of the agreed.
