Black rice, also known as “banned rice”, comes from China, where he could only be consumed by the emperor. Today it is grown throughout Asia, including in China, India, Indonesia and Korea. There are over 200 varieties of this rice, and each is characterized by a unique composition and taste.

Where to buy black rice? We will find it in health food stores, better stocked supermarkets and in online stores. The price of black rice is on average PLN 35-40 per kiloand smaller packaging (e.g. 200 g) costs about PLN 8.

  • A wealth of antioxidants – Black rice contains large amounts of anthocyanins – strong antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress, reduce inflammation and support protection against heart disease and cancer.
  • Perfect for diabetics – Thanks to the low glycemic index, black rice helps stabilize blood sugar levels, which is crucial for people with type 2 diabetes. It additionally supports metabolism and can reduce insulin resistance.
  • Heart support – Studies confirm that regular consumption of black rice can reduce the level of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and increase the level of “good” cholesterol (HDL), which contributes to reducing the risk of atherosclerosis.
  • Training and weight reduction – High fiber content improves intestinal work, prevents constipation and gives a feeling of satiety, which can help reduce body weight.

Contraindications

Although black rice has many advantages, not everyone can consume it in any quantities. People with digestive problems (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome) should introduce it gradually to avoid discomfort. In addition, people with iron deficiency should remember that anthocyanins may slightly hinder its absorption.

Black rice requires longer cooking than white. To shorten this process, it is worth soaking for a few hours before cooking. Then We cook it in a 1: 2 ratio (one portion of rice for two portions of water) for about 30-40 minutes.

What to serve black rice with? You can serve it:

  • Sweet: with fruit, dried fruit, coconut milk,
  • in dry: as an addition to meat, fish, vegetables,
  • in salads: with avocado, tomatoes, rocket and feta,
  • in exotic dishes: in sushi, Thai curry, Indian drafts.
  • 200 g of black rice,
  • 1 zucchini,
  • 1 red onion,
  • 1 can of peas,
  • 1 liter of vegetable broth,
  • 1/2 cup of white wine,
  • olive oil,
  • Salt, pepper to taste.

Preparation:

  1. Cook black rice in salted water according to the recommendations.
  2. Fry the onion in olive oil, add chopped zucchini and peas.
  3. Put in cooked rice and gradually add the broth.
  4. Finally, add wine and spices.
  5. Serve ready risotto.

Black rice is a real “superfood”. Thanks to the high content of antioxidants, fiber and fiber, it supports the heart, reduces blood sugar and helps in the fight against obesity. Although its price is slightly higher than traditional white rice, it is worth including it in the diet. People with diabetes, cardiovascular problems and those who care about health and figureshould consider regular consumption of this extremely healthy product.
