Federal legislation, called the Americans Protection Act against applications controlled by foreign opponents, was supported by Democrats and Republicans in Congress and signed by President Joe Biden last April. The law required a national prohibition of Tiktok, unless Bytedance performed a “qualified alienation” until January 19. This meant that the American part of the business needed to be sold.
Trump previously supported a ban, but changed his position. “I think I have a affection for Tiktok that I didn’t originally had,” he said as he signed the executive order.
If it does not negotiate an agreement until early April to address national security concerns around the current Tiktok property, the app may be closed again. Bytedance has kept that Tiktok is not on sale.
