Spanish company should end 2025 with a total of 70 supermarkets in the country. Lisbon will have two more, Porto plus one.
Mercado began to operate for a decades in 1977 in Spain.
It debuted in Portugal only six years ago, when it opened its first store in Vila Nova de Gaia in 2019. In a few years, it opened dozens of spaces in the country and already has about 60 supermarket.
And 2025 will be a year of expansion again, as the Spanish company expects to open 10 new spaces only throughout this year.
Lisbon and Porto will have more supermarkets Mercado. The capital will have two new features, in the upper one of Lisbon and Quinta do Lambert, while in Porto the new Mercado will be in Amial.
But the first opening in 2025 will be in March: in Santa Iria de Azóia, the first in the municipality of Loures, underlines the.
The following openings, without dates announced, will be in: Frielas (also in Loures), Penafiel (Milhundos), Fafe, Leiria (Vale Sepal), Matosinhos (São Gens) and Palmela.
For these new stores, Mercado has already started recruiting supermarket operators, maintenance assistants and warehouse operator (logistics block), among other functions.
The Spanish company was the fastest growing supermarket chain by 2024 (+0.5 percentage points), according to Kantar WorldPanel’s “Distribution Balance 2024” report, quoted at Marketeer.
