Mergers and acquisitions increased 5% in Brazil by 2024 compared to the previous year. The increase in operations of this type exceeds the amounts noted in 2020, but does not yet hit the numbers of the period 2021 and 2022, points out a survey of KPMG consultancy.
In all, there were 1,582 mergers and acquisitions last year, compared to 1,505 in 2023. “The data show an important resumption in the mergers and acquisition market. After two consecutive years of falling in these transactions, the numbers reveal that companies are more active in these operations, ”says Gustavo Vilela, a listening partner of MPMG mergers and acquisitions in Brazil.
Despite the resumption, Vilela estimates that it is not possible to predict whether this trend will be sustainable over 2025, considering current economic issues.
Household operations performed between Brazilian companies represented most of the business, 981. Those captains mostly by capital of foreign companies were 392. United States (259), Canada (35), United Kingdom (33), Spain (23), Argentina ( 21), Mexico (20), Germany (18) and Colombia (17) lead the main origins of investors.
“The numbers show a growth trend that is partly due to the economic stability observed in the first half of 2024,” says Guilherme Coimbra, a partner of the KPMG mergers and acquisitions in Brazil. “Digitization and technological innovation have continued to be major driving these transactions and investments in renewable energy attracted considerable investments confirming the relevance of the sector.”
For him, the numbers were not even better due to the increase in interest rates in the second half of 2024 and uncertainties regarding tax and political issues.
