Born in Maceió, on May 19, 1940, Carlos José Fontes Diegues, known as, was one of the greatest filmmakers in Brazil, with a career that extended from the late 1950s until 2018.
He studied at Santo Inácio College before joining PUC-Rio Law course, where he held the presidency of the Student Directorate. During its academic trajectory, Created a cineclub and took the first steps in the cinema next to David Neves e Arnaldo Jabor.
In addition, he was editor of the newspaper O Metropolitano, publication of the Metropolitan Union of Students, and joined the Popular Center for Culture of (National Student Union) unit. In the late 1950s, he became one of the founders of Cinema Novo, a film movement that had names such as Glauber Rocha, Leon Hirszman, Paulo Cesar Saracens e Joaquim Pedro de Andrade.
In 1961, he directed, in partnership with David Neves and Affonso Blessedthe short film “Sunday”, one of the first works of the movement.
However, as a solo director, he began his trajectory only in 1962, directing the episode Escola de Samba Alegria de Living in the feature film “Five Times Favela”. Parallel, Diegues also acted as a journalist and criticwriting rehearsals and manifestos about cinema.
With the promulgation of, Diegues and his first wife, the singer Nara Leãothey exiled in Italy and France. He only returned to Brazil in the 1970s, when he directed the films “When Carnival arrives” (1972) and “Joanna France” (1973).
It was also in the 1970s that he achieved his biggest commercial success with the movie “Xica da Silva” (1976). Other of his most acclaimed works of the decade include “summer rains” (1978) and “Bye Bye Brazil” (1979).
In 1981, it was juror in. During the Brazilian cinema crisis in the 1980s, the director produced reduced budget films, such as “a Star Train” (1987) and “Better Days will come” (1989).
After Nara Leão’s death in 1977, with whom he had two children, Isabel e FranciscoCacá Diegues married the producer Renata Almeida Magalhãesin 1981, with whom it had a daughter, Flora.
Shortly after the dismantling of Embrafilme, in the following decade, Diegues again had commercial hits with “Tieta do Agreste” (1996) and “God is Brazilian” (2003). Throughout its trajectory, the largest number already reached by a Brazilian filmmaker.
