Scholz says there will only be peace in Ukraine if his sovereignty is guaranteed

The German Foreign Minister, Olaf Scholz, said this Saturday at the Munich Security Conference that there will only be peace in Ukraine if the sovereignty of the country is guaranteed and warned that “a dictated peace” would be something unacceptable.

“Borders cannot be changed by force. This principle has to be valid for each and every one. A victory of Russia or a collapse of Ukraine would not bring peace but would be a threat to peace and stability in Europe and beyond Europe, ”he said. “There will only be peace if Ukraine’s security is assured. A given peace will never find our support, ”he added.

Scholz added that it would not be accepted a solution that separate the US security interests from Europe’s security interests. “From this only one would take advantage: the president [Vladímir] Putin, ”he said.

The German Chancellor said that Europeans will have to maintain their help to Ukraine “as long as necessary” and that this will have to continue even after the war. “At the end of any negotiated Ukraine solution they have to have armed forces with which it can be in front of any new Russian attack. That implies a huge challenge from the financial, material and logistic point of view. Ukraine cannot face that task alone, ”he said. Therefore, the help of Europeans and Americans will remain necessary. In that context, he recalled that the US and Germany are the countries that in absolute terms have lent Ukraine.

Germany, according to Scholz, is will the debt ”of the German Constitution. “The brake on debt anchored in the German Constitution includes exceptions in emergency cases. A war in Europe is an emergency case, ”he said.

Scholz also said that defense expense in Germany will have to continue growing permanently and for this a debt brake reform will be needed. The norm contemplates that, in times of normality, the new indebtedness cannot exceed 0.35% of the gross domestic product (GDP). Scholz was convinced that after the elections there will be a majority for it. (EFE)
