The investigation began after a discovery during conservation work in Auschwitz. The exposed shoes, belonging to the victims of the Nazi concentration camp, had inscriptions inside. Words or letters that are helping to perceive the history of the victims of the Holocaust.

In one of the shoes of a child, was found an inscription with a full name, the marking of transport and the registration number on the transport list.

Registrations allowed to reach a name: Steinberg aminberg. He was born on June 26, 1938 and lived in Prague.

On August 10, 1942, he was imprisoned along with his parents Ludwig and going to the Theresienstadt ghetto near Prague. All were deported to Auschwitz. This was the first story of many, discovered in Auschwitz’s shoes.

The first Hungarian Jews were sent to Auschwitz on April 28 and 29, 1944from the Kistarchsa field, near Budapest, and the city of Topolya, Voivodina.

The main phase of deportation would begin 15 days later, on May 14, and lasted about 2 months. During this period, 142 trains arrived in Auschwitz, in total there were about 420 thousand deported. Shortly after arrival in Auschwitz, between 325,000 and 330,000 people lost their lives on gas chambers, representing more than 75% of the deported Jews of Hungary.

“For us, it is important to find out as much information as possible, to know the fate of people and honor it.”

In one shoe Hanna got clues to identify two more victims: Elza van der Veen e Aaltje Wallega.

Elza was born on August 12, 1925 and Aaltje was her sister. They arrived in Auschwitz at 17 and 3 years old, were killed in one of the concentration camp gas cameras.
