An immortal legacy in Portuguese music

His talent took him to the international stages, playing alongside figures like Charlie Haden and having his iconic “green years” theme in the Kronos Quartet repertoire. According to Lusa, his work is “a testimony of Portuguese musical identity, marked by deep artistic sensitivity and an unshakable commitment to the tradition of the guitar of Coimbra”.
A man of struggle and convictions
In addition to his role in music, Paredes was anti -fascist combatant, having been arrested by PIDE in the late 1950s and imprisoned in the Aljube jail and Caxias Fort. In a 1978 publication, cited by Lusa, the musician reflected on the importance of art in the struggle for freedom:
“It required the first [período] situated in full fascism and accompanying its development and decline until liberation in 1974, to be given the confusion of values, the castration of the arts, the replacement of the most conscious forms of expression with more manipulable. ”
Carlos Paredes saw culture as an essential element in building a free and participatory society. As he wrote, “responsibilities for the evolution of culture now belong to equivalent parts to intellectuals and all other workers.”
Guitar disease and farewell
His connection to the Portuguese guitar was interrupted in 1993, when he was diagnosed with myelopathy, a disease that affected his bone structure and made it impossible to continue playing. Still, he recorded his last album, “Song for Titi”, released only in 2000, according to Lusa.
