Bars and restaurants estimate revenues of R $ 5.4 billion; data are from the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism

The CNC (National Confederation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism) estimates that the carnival of 2025 moves R $ 12.03 billion in revenues in the country, a real increase of 2.1% over the same period last year, discounted inflation.

For the entity, this growth is directly related to the advance in the number of foreign tourists, driven by the exchange rate and the diversity of cultural attractions of Brazil. If confirmed the projection, this will be the best carnival since 2015, says CNC.

“Brazil is not only an economic alternative, but also a destination that combines cultural diversity and hospitality, attracting tourists from around the world.”said José Roberto Tadros, president of the CNC-Sesc-Senac System.

He stresses that maintaining investments on international promotion and infrastructure is essential for the sector to grow. “We are building a tourism model that combines socioeconomic development and cultural valorization, benefiting the entire production chain”he accentuated.

Tourist spending on bars and restaurants should lead carnival revenues, projection of R $ 5.4 billion, followed by passenger transport services (R $ 3.31 billion) and lodging (R $ 1.28 billion) . These added segments will represent 83% of the total generated by tourism during the revelry.

Strengthening

“The concentration of revenue in sectors such as food, transportation and lodging shows how carnival moves directly to the local economy and favors the strengthening of the service sector.”said Fabio Bentes, CNC economist responsible for the research.

The devaluation of the real against the dollar has placed Brazil on the radar of international travelers. In 2024, the country reached record numbers, with 6.66 million foreign tourists, according to Embratur data. The accumulated revenue of tourism last year was also historic: $ 7.34 billion.

In February 2024 alone, Brazil received 833.31 thousand foreign tourists. For 2025, the expectation of CNC is that this number will grow 4.8%, reaching 868.46 thousand visitors and surpassing the 2018 record.

Temporary jobs

The carnival of 2025 will be responsible for the creation of 32,600 temporary vacancies. The bars and restaurants sector will offer the largest number of posts (22,850), followed by hotels, inns and the like (4,060) and transportation companies (3,310). Nevertheless, the realization rate after the event should be 7%, reflecting the most moderate economic growth forecast by 2025.

“Carnival has a very important role in generating temporary jobs, especially in locations that attract a large volume of visitors. These posts are essential to move the regional economy and meet high seasonal demand ”stressed Alexandre Sampaio, director of CNC and coordinator of Cetur (Business Council of Tourism and Hospitality of the entity).

According to CNC, even in the face of global challenges, Brazilian tourism is still growing. Since the sanitary crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the sector not only recovered, but also exceeded previous levels, recording 11% higher revenues than February 2020.
