“I’m still here” loses Bafta to “Emilia Pérez”

Director Walter Salles had won “Best Non -English Language Movie” on other occasions; French movie victory after controversy

The Brazilian film “I’m still here” lost the award for Best Non-Handling Movie in This Sunday (16.FEV.2025). THE Winner was the Frenchman Emilia Pérez.

The award is considered the British Oscar. Director Walter Salles and actress Fernanda Torres attended the awards in London, UK.

In all, the category was disputed by 5 international productions, with nominees from India, Ireland and Germany.

This is the list of competitors in BAFTA:

  • “I’m still here” – Brazil;
  • “Emilia Pérez” – France;
  • “Everything we imagine as light” – India;
  • “Kneecap” – Ireland; in
  • “The seed of the sacred fruit” – Germany.

The victory of director Jaques Audiard’s film is after the involving actress Karla Sofa Gasco, the protagonist. Old publications with criticism and comments considered prejudiced have repercussions in recent weeks.

The director of “I’m still here”, Walter Salles, has been awarded in Bafta on two occasions. In 1999, with “Central do Brasil” – Protagonized by Fernanda Montenegro, mother of Fernanda Torres – and in 2004, with “motorcycle diaries”. Both were nominated and won the category of Best Non-Handle Language Movie.
