A protest in Yacuiba, a Bolivian city near the An Argentine border, ended in violent confrontation between protesters and police.
The group blocked the “Route 9” to demand from the regional executive the transfer of resources to health, education and productive development, as provided by law.
During the police action to release the highway, protesters attacked the agents with stones, forcing them to kneel, and set fire to vehicles. The blockade was motivated by allegations that mandatory transfers were not made the previous year.
By current legislation, 45% of Gran Chaco’s perks should be distributed among the municipalities of Yacuiba, Caraparí and Villa Montes, 15% for each. Within this division, 10% of values should be intended for essential services in each city.
The episode has increased tension in the region, while local authorities still evaluate measures to restore order and seek a solution to the demands of protesters.
