"There is no bad wolf": villages try to change image of wolves

The population of Lobo is decreasing in Portugal. The government has given three months to appeal a plan that reverse this trend. The special report was to investigate numbers and what can be done by this species protected for over 30 years.

In Gerês not everyone see the wolf with the same eyes. If in Pitões das Junias, the carnivore is almost embraced by the population in Fafião, it is still paying attention to changing mentalities.

Improving the conviviality between man and wolf will help combat stealth, the leading cause of death of the animal protected by law since 1988.

But there is also to watch more the domestic cattle and improve the species habitat, in a landscape alone too humanized.

The last census made between 2019 and 2021 shows that now there are five packs less than 20 years ago. Less wolves and to occupy less and less geographical space in the country.

Given these results, the government has already requested a new strategic plan of the species for the next ten years.

On this Saturday we went to ascertain numbers and what can be done by this species protected decades ago.
