The Clean Record Law, sanctioned in 2010, became the target of allied parliamentarians of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who try to weaken their rules.
Proposals in Congress seek to reduce from eight to two years the ineligibility period for convicted politicians, a change that could benefit Bolsonaro and open gaps for the return of other barred politicians.
A bill presented by Federal Deputy Bibo Nunes (PL-RS) provides for changing the period of ineligibility, allowing convicted politicians to dispute elections in the next election.

If the proposal is approved, Bolsonaro – which is currently ineligible by 2030 due to conviction in the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) – could return to the dispute in 2026.

The proposal is under the rapporteur of Deputy Filipe Barros (PL-PR) in the Chamber’s Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ), where he must face opposition from the ruling base.
