The occurrence of earthquakes affecting the Greek island of Santorini and its surroundings in the Aegean Sea has been mitigated in recent days, but the forestry prognosis is uncertain for the time being, said the main seismologist of the Greek government Costas Papazachos on Monday. TASR reports according to AP.
“Unfortunately, we have to wait. These seismic sequences do not end quickly. They follow their own timetable, “said Papazachos for state radio ERT.
At Santorini and the surrounding islands of iOS, Amorgos and Anafi Greek authorities last week, they declared an emergency in connection with the series of earthquakes that hit the area. Santorini, which usually lives around 15,500 people, left more than 11,000 inhabitants and seasonal workers.
They also closed schools
Schools have been closed on the islands for the third week. The security forces, as part of the precautionary measures, set up rescue teams and secured the backup generators of electricity. The Greek government announced on Monday that Santorini is established an emergency port in case of extensive evacuation.
Seismologists believe that the cause of shocks is the flow of liquid magma underground, which was also confirmed by Papazachos, Professor of Geophysics at the Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, who currently acts as a representative of two crisis committees involving experts and representatives of government, military and rescue services.
According to Papazachos, Santorini, a volcanic island that was created as a result of catastrophic eruptions, is currently no danger from his sleeping volcano.
“We monitor not only seismographs, but also a number of other systems that monitor Earth’s deformation, gas emissions and satellite data. At this point, I can honestly say that we do not have a definite prognosis because it is too early to evaluate the current mild de -escalation of seismic activity. We have already experienced many surprises, “the seismologist said.
