Leaders of several European countries meet on Monday in Paris at an extraordinary summit to discuss US President Donald Trump’s plans for the end of the war in Ukraine, TASR reports.
The informal meeting was convened by French President Emmanuel Macron and only some European countries were invited. The meeting should be attended by leaders of Germany, Britain, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark, represented by the Baltic and Scandinavian countries. President of the European Council António Costa will also be present President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Macron organized the meeting to initiate consultations on the situation in Ukraine and the calls for security in Europe, said the Elysee Palace. According to the EC and Paris, it is possible that informal discussions will continue in other formats to combine all partners who are interested in peace and security in Europe.
The summit was agreed in a short time during the Munich Security Conference in Germany. On it, a special envoy of US President Donald Trump for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg, a saying to Europe by saying that he will not have a place at the negotiating table at the end of the Russian-Ukrainian war.
According to DPA, EU and Ukraine countries are worried that the United States and Russia will strive for a peaceful solution at the bilateral level. Trump recently spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin and, in his words, is determined to end almost three years of war.
The European leaders in Paris are also likely to negotiate a wider strategy in relation to the new US administration after a series of requirements and criticism from Washington.
The Paris meeting takes place in the same week, when the head of American diplomacy Marco Rubio, a US special envoy for the Middle East Steve Witkoff and the National Security Adviser Mike Waltz to meet Russian representatives in Saudi Arabia. Neither representatives of Ukraine nor Europeans will be behind the negotiating table. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Greenable on television said he would not accept any peaceful solution that Ukraine would not participate in.
The European Union has experienced many fundamental moments in connection with the Ukraine war. The following days and weeks, however, according to Politico, can determine not only the future of war in Ukraine, but also the position of the euroblock as a power on the world scene.
