Giannis Antetokounmpo proposed to hold an event outside the US in 2027; Mayor says that city is ready
Giannis Antetokounmpo, player of the Milwaukee Bucks, proposed this Monday (17.Fev.2025) that the All-Star Game of the NBA will take place in Rio de Janeiro. The suggestion was made through X, previously known as Twitter. Eduardo Paes, mayor of Rio, expressed support for the idea in response to Antetokounmpo’s proposal.
“Dear @gannis_an34, Rio is more than ready to host an all star game! It will be an honor to have you here. And we certainly know what a party is like. Let’s go”declared Paes.
The latest edition of the NBA event introduced a model with 4 teams, which compete in semifinals and a final. Antenokounmpo suggests a headquarters relay system, alternating between cities in the United States and other countries.
Rio de Janeiro has experience with major international sporting events, having hosted the 2016 Olympic Games and 2014 World Cup matches. The city has multipurpose arenas such as Jeunesse Arena, which has received basketball events.
Antetokounmpo’s suggestion to internationalize the appear in a moment of the event’s drop. The Greek-nigerian player also suggested a city in China as a possible alternative headquarters for the 2027 edition.
