WASHINGTON (Reuters) – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Sunday that the next few days will determine how serious Russian President Vladimir Putin is about peace in Ukraine, while US officials fly to Saudi Arabia for meetings with meetings Russian authorities.
The main US diplomat also minimized European concerns about being excluded from initial negotiations between Russia and the United States, saying in an interview with CBS that a negotiating process has not yet started seriously.
Earlier Sunday, Reuters reported that US officials handed over to European authorities a questionnaire asking, among other things, how many troops they could contribute to imposing a peace agreement.
But no European ally has been invited to Saudi Arabia, where Russian and American authorities are expected to begin negotiations at the beginning of the week about the end of the war in Ukraine.
“President Trump spoke to Vladimir Putin last week and Putin expressed his interest in peace, and the president expressed his desire to see an end to this conflict in a lasting way that protects Ukrainian sovereignty,” Rubio told CBS.
“Now, of course, this has to be followed by an action, so the next few weeks and days will determine whether it’s serious or not. In the end, a phone call does not make peace. ”
