The minimum wage is the minimum amount of gross monthly salary to pay workers because of others for their work and this amount is updated every year, taking into account the needs of workers, the increase in the cost of living and the evolution of productivity . By 2025, the minimum wage in Portugal went from 820 euros to 870 euros, but in neighboring Spain everyone receives at least 314 euros at the end of the month.
In Castro Marim, in the Algarve, who receives the minimum wage sees 870 euros entering the bank account at the end of each month. However, about five kilometers away, already in Spain, workers who receive the minimum wage take home 1,184 euros. We talk about a difference of 314 euros, which means that Spanish workers receive at least 314 euros than the Portuguese.
What is known is that in 2018, the Spaniards already won more than the Portuguese, although the difference did not reach 200 euros. Still, between 2018 and 2025, the minimum wage value in Spain has already rose 60.91%, accentuating the difference in Portugal.
Once the minimum wage is defined taking into account the cost of living in the country, it would be expected to be superior in Spain. However, the polygraph stresses that the Spanish pay less for gasoline, as well as gas.
The liter of gasoline 95 costs an average of 12 cents in Portugal
With regard to fuel prices, the “Prices UE-27 fuels” reports referring to the third quarter of 2024, published by the Energy Services Regulatory Entity (ERSE), which warns of the fact that, on average, gasoline 95 be sold in Portugal at 1,694 euros per liter. In turn, in Spain, gasoline 95 is sold 1.571 euros per liter, so there is a difference of 12 cents per liter.
It should be noted that the price difference in gasoline 95 between Portugal and Spain is accentuated by the tax burden applied in our country. This is because gasoline, originally, is even more expensive in Spain, however, is the weight of taxes (48% in Spain, 54% in Portugal) that marks the difference in price composition.
In the case of diesel, there is also a price discrepancy between Portugal and Spain, with the price per liter to be 11 cents higher than in the neighboring country.
The gas sells in Spain for almost half of Portugal’s price
Gas is also cheaper in Spain, as in the country of “naked hermanos” a cylinder can cost almost half of what it costs in Portugal. Price differences even exist for the cylinders that are marketed by the same companies on both sides of the border.
